What Exactly Is Greek Mountain Tea?

It's been sipped since philosopher Hippocrates praised its benefits for the immune and respiratory systems, but not many of us in the states have heard about Greek mountain tea (unless you're on the Mediterranean diet).

Also known as “Shepherd’s Tea,” this brew is a naturally caffeine-free herbal tea infusion made from the dried flowers, leaves and stems of the Sideritis plant, which grows in the mountains of Greece.  The tea is rich in antioxidants, and contains significant amounts of flavonoids and polyphenols.

Research done by bioanalytical testing firm, Brunswick Laboratories suggests that Greek mountain tea shares many of the benefits of Green tea, like inducing cellular antioxidant defenses and reducing oxidative stress.

“This report examines the biological effects of Greek mountain tea from various research studies, both in-vitro and in-vivo,” Dr. Jin Ji, executive vice president of Brunswick Laboratories, stated. “Its findings indicate the antioxidant and oxidative stress reduction capabilities, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and gastro-protective properties of the Sideritis plant as consumed in Greek mountain tea.”

Make This: Iced Greek Mountain Tea

Ingredients: 

• 4 small handfuls of loose leaf, single varietal Greek mountain tea (Sideritis)

• 6 cups of water

• Honey and lemon (optional)

Directions:

1. Add water and Greek mountain tea to a medium saucepan, and bring to a boil.

2. Allow to boil for 3-5 minutes and steep for about 3-5 minutes, depending on desired strength.

3. Remove herbs, strain and allow to cool. Pour into a large pitcher filled with ice and serve or refrigerate.

4. Serve with honey or lemon and sprig of Greek mountain tea (Sideritis) as garnish.
